Explanation
Al Mu’min: The One who gives Emaan and Security
When we look at this
Name linguistically, it gives us two primary meanings:
1) From emaan, it means The One who gives emaan. Emaan is tasdeeq (تصديق): affirmation. Mu’min is One who has emaan,
One who gives emaan and One who believes. Emaan is the opposite of taktheeb (تكذيب): denial. When we have emaan in
something, we affirm that is true. For example, in surah Yusuf, the sons of
Ya’qub alayhi salaam said to him: ‘you will not believe in us’, meaning you
will not affirm our truthfulness. Mu’min is One who believes, gives emaan and
affirms the truth.
2) From aman (safety, security and freedom from fear), The One who gives Security
and Peace. The opposite of
security is ikhaafah (اخافة): fear,
so Mu’min is The One who removes the fear. In surah Quraysh we learn: وَآمَنَهُمْ مِنْ خَوْفٍ, and He gave them security from fear. Furthermore, from this same root is the word amaanah (امانة), which give Al Mu’min the meaning of The One who is Faithful.
What
is the connection between these meanings? When you have emaan, you are at aman in dunya and aakhirah, and a person who has amaanah, people have emaan in him and people have aman
from him.
Proof for this Name
Al
Mu’min is mentioned once in the
Qur’an, in suratul Hashr, ayah
23.
If Allah is Al Mu’min, what does this mean?
Mujaahid
rahimahullah says: Al Mu’min is the One who
affirms and believes His Oneness. He affirms it in the Qur’an:شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ Allah
Himself bears witness that there is no diety worthy of worship
except Him. (3:18)
We
learn in several places in the Qur’an that He is a Mu’min and
Musaddiq
(One who Affirms) in His Existence and Oneness. So
if Allah believes in His Oneness, what is expected of us?
We must affirm
His tawheed and His existence, and must also believe
in whatever Allah
commands us. Whatever He informs us, He is Al Mu’min,
so it is the truth and
we must follow and believe in it. This belief not just limited to His
Oneness and His Existence, but everything in its entirety.
If
Allah is Al Mu’min, it also means He is a
Musaddiq: One who Affirms the truthfulness of His Messengers and Prophets.
Allah sends them with messages and miracles, and through those ayaat, the truthfulness of the messenger is clear.
If
Allah is Al Mu’min, He is also Musaddiq of His
Promises, He fulfills His promises. We must believe that whatever
promise Allah has made, He will fulfill it and He will never go against
it. We learn in suratun Noor ayah 55:
Allah has promised those among you who believe, and do
righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to on
the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant
them the authority to practice their religion, that which He has chosen
for them. And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear. (24:55)
This was the promise of Allah to the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam,
and He did not fail in His Promise. Allah ta’ala promised in the beginning
of suratur Room: وَهُمْ مِنْ
they (the Romans), after their defeat, will be victorious. (30:3)
This was the Promise of Allah, and He did not fail in His Promise. In
surah A’raaf, Allah tells us: وَنَادَىٰ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ
أَنْ قَدْ وَجَدْنَا مَا وَعَدَنَا رَبُّنَا حَقًّا فَهَلْ وَجَدْتُمْ مَا وَعَدَ
رَبُّكُمْ حَقًّا And the
dwellers of Paradise will call out to the dwellers
of the Fire (saying):
“We have indeed found true what our Lord had promised us; have you also
found true, what your Lord promised?” They shall say: “Yes.” (7:44)
What does this teach us? We should never have the
slightest doubt ever that the promise of Allah will not come true.
Allah ta’ala for example promises that sadaqah does not reduce wealth, so
when we give sadaqah, we should believe it will not reduce our wealth with
conviction and certainty-He is Al Mu’min and He is Al Musaddiq. Also we
learn that the believers will say when they are taken into Jannah: وَقَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي
صَدَقَنَا وَعْدَهُ All praise
and thanks is only for Allah, the One who fulfilled His promise to us. (39:74)
If Allah is Al Mu’min we should
believe in this and when the time to act upon that belief comes, we should
have certainty and do what Allah commands us. Allah
will give us benefit through what He commanded us, because He knows what
is good and bad for us. We should have certainty when following His
commands that He will fulfill His promise and word.
If
Allah is Al Mu’min, it means that He is the
One who gives
aman (security) and He gives aman to
whomsoever He wills.
Who receives Allah’s
aman?
The
Believers. We learn
from the Qur’an,
It is those who believe
and confuse not their belief with dhulm, for them (only) there is security. (6:82) What does dhulm
(injustice) mean in this ayah? It is shirk primarily (inna shirka la
dhulmun ‘atheem: shirk is the greatest dhulm), and also other injustices. Those who have emaan and do not
mix their emaan with beliefs that will corrupt it, they are the ones who
will have aman (security). When will they have aman? In the dunya, at times of
difficulty and distress as well as the aakhirah. Remember when the Prophet
sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam was hiding in the cave from the Quraysh with
Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu? Imagine: people who wanted to kill them were
right above them, and he sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said to Abu Bakr: لاَ
“Be not afraid, surely Allah is
with us.” (9:40) If we were in that situation, we would have screamed
and cried, and lost our faith in Allah! But Allah gave the Prophet sal
Allahu alayhi wa sallam peace in his heart. It is the aman, the peace and security that Allah gives the
believers, that causes them to be composed and serene. This shows us in difficult situations, we should ask Al Mu’min for aman: ask the One that gives aman to give you aman. In difficult situations, we should not just panic and vent, we
should pray to Al Mu’min to give us peace and serenity in our hearts. On the Day of Judgment, the
believers will have aman.
brings a good deed will have better than it (ie, a better reward),وَهُمْ مِنْ فَزَعٍ يَوْمَئِذٍ آمِنُونَ and they will be, on
that day, at peace during the terror. (27:89) How will they be at peace? When mankind is in shock
and fright, walking as if they are drunk, the Prophets are saying nafsee
nafsee (myself, myself): they will be at peace in their hearts, calm, and
they have security.
Those who have istiqaamah
(steadfastness). Allah says in the Qur’an:إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا
Indeed, those who say: “Our Rabb is Allah,” and then they
remain firm (upon that statement), on them the angels will descend
(saying):
“Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise
which
you have been promised! (41:30)
Istiqaamah is to be
steadfast upon emaan, to act upon it and to be
firm upon it.
At the time
of death, the angels will tell those who had istiqaamah of
their reward,
so in the hereafter: in the grave and on the Day of Judgment, they will
have aman–no fear or grief.
If
Allah ta’ala is Al Mu’min:
He gives aman so His creation is saved from
His injustice. We
learned this with the name As
Salaam. We know
that we commit so many sins throughout
the days and nights, yet
Allah pardons us. If Allah were to take
account of everyone for all of their sins, not a single creature would
remain living. In the dunya, we only suffer very slight
consequences of our sins and if Allah were to inflict retribution for all
of our bad deeds, not a creature would prosper.
Allah ta’ala does not do
injustice upon His creations, not even the slightest. And moreover, وَيَعْفُو عَن كَثِيرٍ and
He pardons much (42:30)–many, many sins. If
this is Al Mu’min, then the believer should
not commit dhulm either.
An example of this is the hadeeth where
the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said:“By Allah, he does not believe!
By Allah, he does not believe!
By Allah, he does not believe!” It was said, “Who is that,
O Allah’s
Apostle?” He said, “That person whose neighbor does not feel
safe
from his evil.” (Bukhari)
Our neighbors are the ones who
sit with us, whose room is next to us,
the one who lives by us, the one
who is sitting in the car/bus with us,
the one who works by us, the one
who is in the next line to us, they are
all our neighbors…so the one whose
neighbor is not safe from his
sharr (evil), such a person has not believed
and he is not a believer.
From another hadeeth in Tirmidhi
we learn that
the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: “allaa ukhbirukum bil mu’min,
shall I not inform you of the believer? The companions said of course, and
he said: al mu’min man aminahu
naas ‘alaa amwaalihim wa
anfusihim, the believer is one for whom
people are safe
with regards to their wealth and lives.”
The believer is the one who
returns their amaanaat (trusts), such as if they borrow money or borrow a
possession, they return it safely. Such a person is not a believer who
harms the other with regards to their wealth and lives. The hadeeth
continues, “wal
muslim man salimal muslimu min lisaanihi wa yaddihi,
and as for the muslim, he is the one whom other muslims are safe from his
tongue and hand.”
To
summarize, if Allah is Al Mu’min: we are supposed to believe in Him, in His
messengers and what they brought. We follow what He commands because He Affirms
it. We should ask Him for aman, in the dunya and aakhirah. We should not to
dhulm upon others at all.
